Jae-Hyuck Cho on the fourth volume of his complete Mozart sonata cycle: By the time I reached this fourth volume, I realised that I was smiling a great deal while playing these three sonatas. Mozart's playfulness is often spoken of as charm, wit, or lightness, but I think it is something deeper: it is part of the way he sees the world. I have always felt close to this side of Mozart. I enjoy the pleasure of discovering another possibility inside something that seems familiar, and Mozart's music gives me that same delight: everything is beautifully made, yet nothing feels trapped by it's construction. The rules are present, but imagination is always free. That is why the word play suits this volume so well. In these sonatas Mozart plays with musical ideas, expectation and memory, and with the many voices a piano can contain. As a performer, I am invited to join him - remaining curious, responsive and open to surprise.
